1Paper folding and punching

Fold a paper, punch a hole, open it up โ€” how many holes, and where? The secret: every fold line acts like a mirror.

1. fold right onto left2. punch3. unfold
One fold + one punch = 2 holes, mirror images of each other across the fold line.
1. top down2. left onto right3. punch
Fold twice, then punch once through all 4 layers.
undo fold 2undo fold 1: 4 holes
Unfold in reverse order: undo the last fold first. Each unfold doubles the holes.
โœ๏ธ Worked example: two folds, one punch

A square paper is folded top-to-bottom, then left-to-right, and one hole is punched near the middle of the small square. How does it look when opened?

  1. After two folds there are 4 layers, so there will be 4 holes.
  2. Undo fold 2 (leftโ€“right): the hole gets a twin mirrored across the standing fold line โ†’ 2 holes side by side in the bottom half.
  3. Undo fold 1 (topโ€“bottom): both holes get twins mirrored across the flat fold line โ†’ 2 more holes in the top half.

Answer: 4 holes, arranged like the corners of a rectangle around the centre, symmetric across both fold lines.

1. fold along diagonal2. punch3. unfold
A slanting fold is still a mirror: the new hole is the reflection across the diagonal.
โš ๏ธ Olympiad trap

A hole punched exactly on the fold line does not double. It opens into one hole (a half-circle on the fold becomes one full circle). Also, a hole near the fold opens into two holes close together; a hole near the open edge opens into two holes far apart.

A square sheet is folded in half three times, and one hole is punched through all the layers (not on a fold). How many holes will the unfolded sheet have?

  1. 3
  2. 6
  3. 8
  4. 9
Each fold doubles the layers: 2 โ†’ 4 โ†’ 8. One punch through 8 layers makes 8 holes.

2Paper cutting patterns

Cutting works exactly like punching: whatever you cut from a folded paper is copied in mirror image across every fold when you open it.

1. fold in half2. cut on the fold3. unfold
A half-shape cut on the fold opens into one whole shape (half-heart โ†’ heart, half-diamond โ†’ diamond).
โœ๏ธ Worked example: cutting a corner

A square paper is folded in half and then in half again to make a small square. The corner where both folds meet (the centre of the paper) is cut off with a straight cut. What do you see when you open it?

  1. The corner where both folds meet is the centre of the big paper.
  2. Cutting off that corner removes a small triangle with its point at the centre.
  3. Unfold once: the triangle and its mirror twin join into a bigger triangle (half a diamond). Unfold again: that is mirrored too โ†’ 4 small triangles meet at the centre.

Answer: A square (diamond-shaped) hole in the middle of the paper.

You want to cut one whole heart from a paper folded in half. Where should you draw the half-heart before cutting?

  1. Along the open edges
  2. Along the folded edge
  3. In the middle, away from all edges
  4. It does not matter
A shape cut against the fold opens into one whole, symmetric shape. Drawn anywhere else, it opens into two separate pieces instead of one heart.
๐Ÿ’ก Tip

For fold-and-cut questions, draw the fold lines lightly on the option pictures. The correct unfolded paper must look the same on both sides of every fold line.

3Dice: the standard die

A die (plural: dice) is a cube: it has 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 corners. Each face touches 4 other faces along its edges (adjacent faces) and has exactly 1 opposite face that it never touches.

a standard die1 โ†” 6 (1 + 6 = 7)2 โ†” 5 (2 + 5 = 7)3 โ†” 4 (3 + 4 = 7)
On a standard die, opposite faces always add up to 7. The 3 faces you see at once are never opposite each other.
Remember: on a standard die opposite faces add up to 7: 1 โ†” 6, 2 โ†” 5, 3 โ†” 4.
โœ๏ธ Worked example: the hidden bottom

A standard die is lying on a table with 4 dots on top. How many dots are on the face touching the table?

  1. The top face and the bottom face are opposite.
  2. Opposite faces add to 7, so bottom = 7 โˆ’ 4 = 3.

Answer: 3

โœ๏ธ Worked example: dots you cannot see

A standard die shows 1 on top, 2 in front and 3 on the right. What is the total of the dots on the three faces you cannot see?

  1. All six faces: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 = 21.
  2. Faces you see: 1 + 2 + 3 = 6.
  3. Hidden faces = 21 โˆ’ 6 = 15. (Check: they are 6, 5, 4 โ€” the opposites.)

Answer: 15

โš ๏ธ Olympiad trap

The โ€œadd to 7โ€ rule is only for a standard die. If the question gives you pictures of a die with its own numbers or letters, you must work out the opposite faces from the pictures.

On a standard die, which number is opposite 2?

  1. 3
  2. 4
  3. 5
  4. 6
Opposite faces add to 7: 2 + 5 = 7.

4Finding opposite faces from views

When a cube is shown in 2 or 3 positions, use the elimination method: faces seen together in one view are neighbours โ€” they can never be opposite.

BACview 1CADview 2FBCview 3
Three views of the same cube with letters A to F. Which letter is opposite C?
โœ๏ธ Worked example: which letter is opposite C?

Use the three views above.

  1. Write the neighbours of C from every view where C appears: view 1 โ†’ A, B; view 2 โ†’ A, D; view 3 โ†’ B, F.
  2. So C touches A, B, D, F. A face has only 4 neighbours, so the one letter left over must be opposite.
  3. Letters are A, B, C, D, E, F. Not C itself, not A, B, D, F โ†’ E.

Answer: E is opposite C.

โœ๏ธ Worked example: finish the pairs

Using the same views, find the other two opposite pairs.

  1. A's neighbours: B, C (view 1), D (view 2). So A is not opposite B, C or D. Cโ€“E is already a pair, so A must be opposite F.
  2. The last two letters, B and D, must be opposite each other.

Answer: A โ†” F, B โ†” D, C โ†” E.

  1. Pick the letter that appears in the most views.
  2. List all its neighbours from every view.
  3. If you find 4 neighbours, the 6th face is its opposite.
  4. Remove that pair and repeat with the remaining 4 faces.

A cube has faces numbered 1 to 6 (not a standard die). In different views, face 3 is seen next to 1, 2, 5 and 6. Which face is opposite 3?

  1. 1
  2. 2
  3. 4
  4. 6
Face 3 has 4 neighbours: 1, 2, 5, 6. The only face left over is 4, so 4 is opposite 3.
โš ๏ธ Olympiad trap

Two faces in the same picture can never be opposite. If an option says โ€œA is opposite Bโ€ and A and B are seen together in any view, cross it out at once.

5Open dice: nets of a cube

A net is a flat shape of 6 squares that folds up into a cube. In a net, you can find opposite faces without folding in your head:

231456
Cross net: same colour = opposite faces. 2โ†”5, 1โ†”6, 3โ†”4 (each pair adds to 7 โ€” a real die!)
ABCDEF
Staircase net: Aโ†”C and Dโ†”F (skip one in a straight row); the two left over, Bโ†”E, are opposite.
Skip-one rule: in a straight line of squares, two faces with one square between them are opposite. Squares that share an edge in the net are always neighbours (never opposite).
โœ๏ธ Worked example: the cross net

In the cross net above, which face is opposite 3?

  1. The middle row is 3, 1, 4 โ€” a straight line of three squares.
  2. 3 and 4 have one square (1) between them โ†’ opposite.
  3. The column 2, 1, 5, 6: skip one โ†’ 2 โ†” 5 and 1 โ†” 6.

Answer: 4. (All pairs add to 7, so this net folds into a standard die.)

โœ๏ธ Worked example: the staircase net

In the staircase net (A B C on top, D E F below starting under C), which face is opposite B?

  1. Top row A, B, C: skip one โ†’ A โ†” C.
  2. Bottom row D, E, F: skip one โ†’ D โ†” F.
  3. Only B and E are left, so they must be opposite.

Answer: E

๐Ÿ’ก Tip

Not every set of 6 joined squares is a net! A row of 5 squares in a line, or 4 squares arranged in a 2 ร— 2 block, cannot fold into a cube. There are exactly 11 different cube nets.

In a cross-shaped net, the middle column reads P, Q, R, S from top to bottom. Which face is opposite Q?

  1. P
  2. R
  3. S
  4. It cannot be found
Skip one square: Q and S have R between them, so Q โ†” S. (P โ†” R is the other pair in that column.)

6Counting cubes and painted cubes

Cubes in a stack

Count layer by layer: bottom 3 ร— 3 = 9, middle 2 ร— 2 = 4, top 1. Some cubes are hidden underneath โ€” but they must be there!
โœ๏ธ Worked example: the stepped stack

How many small cubes are in the stack above?

  1. Count layer by layer, from the bottom.
  2. Bottom layer: a 3 ร— 3 square โ†’ 9 cubes.
  3. Middle layer: 2 ร— 2 โ†’ 4 cubes.
  4. Top layer: 1 cube.
  5. Total = 9 + 4 + 1 = 14.

Answer: 14 cubes (only 9 of them can be seen from here).

โš ๏ธ Olympiad trap

Don't count only the cubes you can see. A cube floating in the air is impossible, so every cube on top must have cubes under it holding it up โ€” count those hidden ones too.

Painted cubes

A big cube is painted on all its outside faces and then cut into small equal cubes. How many small cubes have paint on 3, 2, 1 or 0 faces?

3 faces painted: 8 corners2 faces painted: 12 edges1 face painted: 6 face-centres0 faces: 1 hidden centre
Paint a 3 ร— 3 ร— 3 cube, then cut it into 27 small cubes: 8 + 12 + 6 + 1 = 27.

โœ๏ธ Worked example: a 2 ร— 2 ร— 2 cube

A 2 ร— 2 ร— 2 cube is painted on the outside and cut into 8 small cubes. How many small cubes have exactly 3 faces painted?

  1. A 2 ร— 2 ร— 2 cube is made of only corner cubes โ€” there are 8 corners.
  2. Every corner cube has 3 painted faces.

Answer: All 8.

A painted 3 ร— 3 ร— 3 cube is cut into 27 small cubes. How many small cubes have exactly 2 faces painted?

  1. 6
  2. 8
  3. 12
  4. 1
The cubes with exactly 2 painted faces sit in the middle of each edge. A cube has 12 edges โ†’ 12.
