1How to use this list

Every trap below has two parts: the trap (the answer that looks right) and the truth (the answer that is right). Cover the Truth column with your hand, read the trap, and say the truth aloud before you look.

Remember: the three golden habits — Read the question twice (look for NOT, LEAST, LEFT, UNshaded), check every option before you choose, and ask "what did they really ask for?" (the money left, not the money spent).

2Computers traps

15 marks. Most mistakes here come from shortcut keys that look alike and facts that are almost right.

⚠️ Trap: "F7 opens the Thesaurus."

✅ The truth: F7 = Spelling & Grammar. Shift + F7 = Thesaurus (synonyms and antonyms). Olympiads love to swap these two.

⚠️ Trap: "F5 starts the slide show from the slide I am on."

✅ The truth: F5 always starts from the first slide. Shift + F5 starts from the current slide. Esc ends the show.

⚠️ Trap: PRINT HELLO TURTLE or PRINT (HELLO TURTLE)

✅ The truth: A sentence in LOGO must go inside square brackets: PRINT [HELLO TURTLE]. One word can use a quote mark: PRINT "HELLO.

History & generations · Lesson 1

TrapTruth
The Pascaline could do all four operations.Pascal's Pascaline (1642) could only add and subtract. Leibniz's machine could do all four.
Blaise Pascal is the Father of the Computer.Charles Babbage is the Father of the Computer (Difference Engine, Analytical Engine). Ada Lovelace is called the first programmer.
ENIAC had about 12,000 tubes.ENIAC (shown to the world in 1946) had about 18,000 vacuum tubes and weighed about 30 tonnes.
The famous "computer bug" was a software mistake. In 1947 Grace Hopper's team found a real moth stuck inside the Harvard Mark II computer and taped it into their logbook.

India's first supercomputer was a Cray.PARAM 8000 (1991), built by C-DAC, Pune, led by Dr Vijay Bhatkar.
On an abacus, count every bead on the rod.Count only the beads moved to the beam; beads resting away from it count 0.

Parts, memory & keyboard · Lesson 2

TrapTruth
The Control Unit does the adding. The ALU calculates and compares. The CU only controls and directs.
ROM is volatile.RAM is volatile (loses data when power goes). ROM is non-volatile.
1 KB = 1,000 bytes.Computer memory grows in steps of 1,024: 1 KB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MB = 1,024 KB, 1 GB = 1,024 MB.
1 GB is always more than any number of MB.Convert first! 1 GB = 1,024 MB, so 1,500 MB > 1 GB.
1 byte = 4 bits.1 byte = 8 bits. 4 bits = 1 nibble.
A touchscreen is only an output device.A touchscreen is both input and output.
A keyboard with lights is input and output.A keyboard is still an input device only.
Seeing the answer on the screen is "Process".Showing the result is Output. Process happens inside the CPU.
Shift is a toggle key.Toggle keys switch a mode on/off: Caps Lock, Num Lock, Scroll Lock. Shift, Ctrl, Alt are modifier keys (work only while held).
Caps Lock gives the symbols on number keys (like @, #).Caps Lock only gives capital letters. Hold Shift for the top symbols.
Backspace and Delete erase the same side.Backspace erases to the left of the cursor; Delete erases to the right.
A plotter or dot-matrix printer is best for printing books.A laser printer gives crisp pages fast. A plotter is for large drawings and maps.

Windows & files · Lesson 3

TrapTruth
Ctrl + Tab opens the Start menu.Ctrl + Esc (or the Windows key) opens Start. Ctrl + Shift + Esc opens Task Manager.
Win + D opens File Explorer.Win + D shows the Desktop. Win + E opens File Explorer.
Pressing Delete removes a file forever.Delete sends it to the Recycle Bin (can be restored). Shift + Delete deletes it permanently.
Restore puts a file back where it was first made.Restore puts it back in the folder it was in when it was deleted.
Copy and Paste removes the original.Only Cut and Paste moves a file. Copy leaves the original where it was.
Dragging a file always moves it.Drag on the same drive = move; drag to a different drive = copy.
Ctrl-click selects a row of files.Shift-click selects files in a row; Ctrl-click picks files here and there.

Word & Paint · Lesson 4

TrapTruth
Ctrl + C centres text.Ctrl + C = Copy. Ctrl + E = Centre.
Double-click selects a paragraph.Double-click = a word; triple-click = a paragraph.
H₂O uses superscript.Subscript goes down (H₂O). Superscript goes up (5²).
Home jumps to the start of the document.Home = start of the line. Ctrl + Home = start of the document.
Ctrl + S makes a new copy of the file.Ctrl + S saves over the same file. Save As (F12) makes a new copy.
Undo removes your first action.Undo (Ctrl + Z) removes the latest action first.
Cut text goes to the Recycle Bin.Cut text goes to the Clipboard. A new Cut or Copy replaces what Ctrl + V pastes.
"Ignore All" ignores that word in every document forever.Ignore All works only in the current document.
Paint gridlines can be seen at any zoom.Gridlines show only when you zoom to 400% or more.
The Paint eraser always leaves white. The eraser paints with Colour 2. The right mouse button also uses Colour 2.
Fill with colour only fills inside the shape. If the shape has a gap, the paint leaks out. Close the shape first.
The Curve tool can bend a line many times.A Paint curve can be bent only two times.

PowerPoint, Internet & safety · Lesson 5 · Lesson 6

TrapTruth
Ctrl + N adds a new slide.Ctrl + N = new presentation. Ctrl + M = new slide.
Transition and animation are the same.Transition = effect between slides. Animation = effect on an object within a slide.
Pressing B ends the slide show.B only blanks the screen (black). Esc ends the show.
The dotted boxes on a slide are gridlines. They are placeholders ("Click to add title").
Google Chrome is a search engine.Chrome and Edge are web browsers. Google and Bing are search engines.
The Internet and the World Wide Web are the same. The Internet is the worldwide network; the Web is the pages and sites you open on it.
In isro.gov.in, "isro" shows it is a government site..gov shows government; "isro" is the organisation's name; .in shows India.
One strong password for every account is safe.Use a different strong password for each account, and never share it — not even with a best friend.

LOGO, coding & robots · Lesson 7 · Lesson 8

TrapTruth
A triangle uses RT 60 (its inside angle). The turtle turns the outside angle = 360 ÷ sides: triangle RT 120, square 90, pentagon 72, hexagon 60.
REPEAT 5 always draws a pentagon. The turning angle decides the shape, not just the number of repeats.
HT stops the turtle drawing.HT only hides the turtle; it still draws. PU moves without drawing; PE rubs out lines.
CT clears the drawing.CT clears the text. CS clears the screen (drawing).
FD100 works.Leave a space: FD 100.
PRINT PRODUCT 6 SUM 2 3 gives 11.Work the inner part first: SUM 2 3 = 5, then 6 × 5 = 30.
FD 50 BK 20: the turtle walked 30 steps. It walked 70 steps but ended 30 steps from the start.
REPEAT 3 inside REPEAT 4 runs 7 times.Loops inside loops multiply: 4 × 3 = 12.
"Greater than 80" includes 80.> 80 means more than 80; 80 itself is not included.
A robot must look like a person.A robot vacuum or a factory robot arm is a robot too. Most robots look nothing like people.

Which key combination opens the Start menu in Windows?

  1. Ctrl + Tab
  2. Ctrl + Esc
  3. Ctrl + Shift + Esc
  4. Ctrl + Alt
Ctrl + Esc opens Start. Ctrl + Shift + Esc opens Task Manager, and Ctrl + Tab switches tabs.

Which of these is a web browser and NOT a search engine?

  1. Google
  2. Bing

To draw a regular hexagon, the turtle should use REPEAT 6 [FD 50 RT ___].

  1. 120
  2. 90
  3. 60
  4. 45

3Mental Ability traps

15 marks. The sums are easy — the traps are in reading what is asked and in place value.

⚠️ Trap: 1 million − 900 tens = 999,100

✅ The truth: first turn "900 tens" into a number: 900 × 10 = 9,000. Then 1,000,000 − 9,000 = 991,000. Always multiply by the place name first.

⚠️ Trap: "0.45 is bigger than 0.5 because 45 is bigger than 5."

✅ The truth: give them the same number of places: 0.5 = 0.50, and 50 hundredths > 45 hundredths. More digits does not mean a bigger decimal.

Numbers & Roman numerals · Lesson 1

TrapTruth
The face value of 6 in 3,46,215 is 6,000.Face value is just the digit: 6. Its place value is 6,000.
1 million = 1 crore.1 million = 10 lakh. 1 crore = 100 lakh = 10 million.
The smallest 5-digit number is 10,001 (or 11,111).It is 10,000. The greatest is 99,999.
From 1,000 to 9,999 there are 8,999 numbers.When both ends count, add 1: 9,999 − 1,000 + 1 = 9,000.
"Four lakh five thousand seven" = 4,5,7.Put 0 in every empty place: 4,05,007.
XL = 60; CD = 600.A smaller numeral before a bigger one is subtracted: XL = 40, CD = 400. (LX = 60, DC = 600.)
95 = VC; 99 = IC.V, L and D are never subtracted or repeated, and I goes only before V and X. 95 = XCV, 99 = XCIX.
40 = XXXX.No symbol is written 4 times in a row: 40 = XL, 4 = IV.
A longer Roman numeral is bigger.XXXIX (39) is longer than XL (40) but smaller. Work out each value.

Operations · Lesson 2

TrapTruth
In subtraction, take the smaller digit from the bigger in each column. If the top digit is smaller, borrow. Never swap digits.
In long multiplication, the tens line goes straight under the ones line.Shift the tens line one place left (put a 0).
The quotient of 7,254 ÷ 7 is 136.When a step is too small to divide, write 0 in the quotient: 1,036 r 2.
A remainder can be as big as the divisor.Remainder is always smaller than the divisor.
To check division: divisor × quotient.Dividend = divisor × quotient + remainder.
100 children, 30 per bus → 3 buses. The 10 left over need a bus too: 4 buses. Round up when everyone must fit.

Factors & divisibility · Lesson 3

TrapTruth
1 is a prime number.1 is neither prime nor composite. 2 is the smallest prime and the only even prime.
Odd numbers like 51 and 91 are prime.51 = 3 × 17 and 91 = 7 × 13. Odd does not mean prime.
Every even number divides by 4.For 4, test the last two digits (46 ✗). For 8, test the last three.
For 3, look at the last digit. For 3 and 9, add all the digits.
5,133 divides by 3, so it divides by 6.6 needs both 2 and 3. 5,133 is odd, so no.
The LCM of 4 and 6 is 24.24 is a common multiple, but the lowest is 12. Don't just multiply.

Fractions, decimals & money · Lesson 4 · Lesson 5

TrapTruth
1/2 + 1/4 = 2/6.Never add denominators. Make them the same: 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4.
1/8 is bigger than 1/3 because 8 > 3.A bigger denominator means smaller pieces: 1/3 > 1/8.
2 shaded, 3 unshaded → 2/3.The denominator is all the parts: 2/5.
3 2/5 = 11/5 (3 × 2 + 5).Multiply the whole by the denominator: 3 × 5 + 2 = 17 → 17/5.
1/4 = 0.4 and 3/4 = 3.4.1/4 = 0.25; 3/4 = 0.75. A fraction bar is not a decimal point.
5.4 − 0.89: line up the last digits.Line up the decimal points: 5.40 − 0.89 = 4.51.
75 cm = 7.5 m.75 cm = 0.75 m (100 cm = 1 m).
₹5.07 = 5 rupees 70 paise.₹5.07 = 5 rupees 7 paise. 70 paise is ₹5.70.
"Buy 2, get 1 free": 9 chocolates cost the price of 9.You pay for 2 out of every 3: 9 chocolates cost the price of 6.
More coins means more money.14 fifty-paise coins = ₹7 only. Change everything to rupees first.

Measurement, time & calendar · Lesson 6

TrapTruth
1 kg 50 g = 1,500 g.1 kg 50 g = 1,050 g. Keep the 0 in the hundreds place.
1900 and 2100 are leap years (they divide by 4).Century years must divide by 400. 2000 was a leap year; 1900 and 2100 are not.
From 15 to 31 March is 16 days.When both days count, add 1: 31 − 15 + 1 = 17 days.
1 hour = 100 minutes; ¼ hour = 25 minutes.1 hour = 60 minutes, so ¼ hour = 15 minutes.
9:30 p.m. in 24-hour time is 19:30.Add 12, not 10: 21:30.
A train leaves at 21:30 and arrives 06:15 — subtract to get the time taken.It crosses midnight: 21:30 → 24:00 is 2 h 30 min, plus 6 h 15 min = 8 h 45 min.
A clock that is 10 minutes fast shows 8:00, so it is 8:10.A fast clock runs ahead: real time is 7:50.
At 4:50 the short hand points at 5, so it's 5 o'clock-something.The hour is the number the short hand has just passed: 4.

Geometry, perimeter, area & data · Lesson 7 · Lesson 8

TrapTruth
A cylinder has 2 vertices.A cylinder has 0 vertices, 2 curved edges, 2 flat faces and 1 curved surface.
A cube has 8 faces.Cube: 6 faces, 12 edges, 8 vertices.
Radius 6 cm → diameter 3 cm.Diameter = 2 × radius = 12 cm.
180° is an obtuse angle.180° is a straight angle. Obtuse is between 90° and 180°.
The diagonals of a rectangle are lines of symmetry.A rectangle has only 2 lines of symmetry; a square has 4 (including diagonals).
Same perimeter means same area.A 1 × 5 and a 3 × 3 rectangle both have perimeter 12, but areas 5 and 9.
Fencing a field uses its area.Fencing and wire go around → perimeter. Tiles and carpet cover → area (square units).
Cutting a square out of a rectangle's corner reduces the perimeter. The perimeter stays the same (only the area shrinks).
8 symbols in a pictograph = 8 books.Always use the key: if one symbol = 5 books, 8 symbols = 40. A half symbol = half the key.
"How many more" and "how many times" are the same."More" → subtract. "Times" → divide.
10 m road, a tree every 2 m from end to end → 5 trees.Trees = gaps + 1 = 6 (on a straight line with trees at both ends).

Which is the greatest?

  1. 0.45
  2. 0.5
  3. 0.405
  4. 0.09
Write them all with 3 places: 0.450, 0.500, 0.405, 0.090. 0.500 is the greatest.

Which year is NOT a leap year?

  1. 1900
  2. 2000
  3. 2024
  4. 1996
1900 is a century year that does not divide by 400, so it is not a leap year.

How is 99 written in Roman numerals?

  1. IC
  2. XCVIIII
  3. LXXXXIX
  4. XCIX
99 = 90 + 9 = XC + IX. I can only go before V and X, so IC is wrong.

4Reasoning traps

15 marks. Slow down on directions, ranks and mirror images — these are where quick answers go wrong.

⚠️ Trap: 9th from the left + 8th from the right = 17 children

✅ The truth: the same child was counted from both ends. Total = Left + Right − 1 = 9 + 8 − 1 = 16.

⚠️ Trap: "Facing South, turn left → West."

✅ The truth: facing South, your left hand points East and your right hand points West. Draw the compass and turn your page if it helps.

Series, alphabet, analogy & odd one out · Lesson 1 · Lesson 2

TrapTruth
3, 6, 12, 24, … the gap is +3 each time.Check the gaps and the rule: here each number doubles → 48.
Letters between J (10) and D (4) = 10 − 4 = 6."Between" leaves out both ends: 10 − 4 − 1 = 5 (E, F, G, H, I).
"To the right of" means earlier in the alphabet.Right = later (towards Z); left = earlier (towards A).
The 7th letter from the end is G.From the end: position = 27 − 7 = 20 → T.
In dictionary order, Pencil comes before Pen.When one word starts the other, the shorter one comes first: Pen, Pencil.
2 : 4 :: 5 : 10 (double it).A rule must fit every pair. If 2 → 4 and 3 → 9, the rule is "multiply by itself": 5 → 25.
Odd one out: always try odd/even first and stop.If all are odd, look deeper — prime, square, multiple of 7…

Coding–decoding · Lesson 3

TrapTruth
To decode, use the same rule again.Decoding does the opposite: if coding moved letters +1, decoding moves them −1.
One step back from A is "nothing".The alphabet wraps around: back from A is Z; forward from Z is A.
Every letter moves the same way.Check each letter: codes often alternate (+1, −1) or reverse the word too.
With "Z = 1, Y = 2 …", B = 2.In reverse order, a letter's number = 27 − its normal position: B = 25.

Directions & ranking · Lesson 4

TrapTruth
Facing West, left is North.Facing West, left is South and right is North.
Walked 6 m North and 8 m East → 14 m from start.14 m is the distance walked. Straight-line distance from start is 10 m (6-8-10 triangle).
In the morning your shadow falls East. The morning Sun is in the East, so the shadow falls West (always opposite the Sun).
12th from the top in 30 → 18th from the bottom.Rank from other end = Total − rank + 1 = 30 − 12 + 1 = 19.
Always subtract 1 in ranking sums.Subtract 1 only when the same person is counted from both ends. "5 people are behind her" does not include her — she is 6th from the back.

Mirror, water & hidden figures · Lesson 5

TrapTruth
A mirror just flips each letter in its place.A (side) mirror flips left–right, so the order reverses too: the last letter comes first.
A water image reverses the order of letters.Water flips top–bottom; the order stays the same.
Water image = turning the picture upside down.Turning it round also swaps left and right, so that is not a water image.
NOON looks the same in a mirror. It is spelt the same backwards, but N is not symmetrical, so it changes. Letters like A, H, M, O, T, U, V, W, X, Y stay the same.
A clock shows 3:40 in a mirror, so the time is 3:40.Real time = 11:60 − 3:40 = 8:20.
A flipped or turned shape still counts as "hidden" inside. The hidden figure must be the same way round and the same shape.

Figure series, counting, folding & dice · Lesson 6 · Lesson 7

TrapTruth
In a figure series, watch only one thing.Often two things change (a dot moves AND lines are added). Track each separately.
Count only the small triangles.Count small ones, then shapes made by joining them, then the big outer shape.
A diamond is not a square.A square turned on its corner still counts as a square.
Fold a paper twice, punch once → 2 holes.Two folds = 4 layers = 4 holes.
The unfolded hole just slides across. It is reflected across the fold, the same distance from the fold line.
Faces side by side in the net can be opposite.Faces that touch in the net can never be opposite on the cube.
Opposite faces of every die add up to 7.That is true only for a standard die. For other dice, work it out from the pictures.
Painted 3 × 3 × 3 cube: 12 cubes have 3 painted faces.Only the 8 corner cubes have 3. The 12 edge cubes have 2.

Venn, clocks & calendars · Lesson 8

TrapTruth
Tea only = 12, both = 5 → 12 like tea.The middle part likes tea too: 12 + 5 = 17.
At 3:30 the hands make 90°.The hour hand has moved halfway to 4, so the angle is 75°.
Same date next year falls on the same weekday.365 days = 52 weeks + 1 day, so it moves on 1 day (2 days if 29 February is crossed).
Doctors are all inside the Women circle.Only some doctors are women, so the circles overlap.

Riya is 7th from the front and 10th from the back of a line. How many children are in the line?

  1. 17
  2. 18
  3. 16
  4. 15
Riya is counted twice, so 7 + 10 − 1 = 16.

  1. East
  2. West
  3. North
  4. South
Facing South, left is East.

A clock seen in a mirror shows 4:15. What is the real time?

  1. 4:15
  2. 8:15
  3. 7:15
  4. 7:45
11:60 − 4:15 = 7:45.
